Marpa House – The Future
ANNOUNCEMENT
Dearest friends,
As we come to terms with the profound loss of our precious teacher’s physical presence, and its impact on us both individually and as a sangha, we are very aware that all of Rinpoche’s students will want to ensure that the long-term spiritual support of Marpa House remains secure, and that Chime Rinpoche’s guidance and wishes in this matter are faithfully followed.
What Rinpoche created here is truly unique. It is the continuity of his unique vision, his love and care for us all, his rich legacy of teachings, his joy, warmth, and skill in presenting the Dharma, and the beautiful way he guided us over so many years that we are deeply committed to preserving.
Therefore, we are delighted to share with you and offer reassurance that, in accordance with Rinpoche’s wishes and our subsequent heartfelt request to Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche, he has very kindly agreed to provide ongoing spiritual guidance for Marpa House. He will help us preserve and sustain Rinpoche’s vision and legacy into the future. We are deeply grateful for this extraordinary support and assistance.
Additionally, in accordance with Chime Rinpoche’s wishes, Lama Kunga Dorje will also support us with spiritual matters. We are profoundly honoured and sincerely grateful to them both for their support.
Of course, other esteemed teachers such as Tulku Pasang Rinpoche, Traleg Khandro, Khenpo Gyurme, Khenpo Tseten, and Venerable Sean Price will continue to visit and share teachings. We also have the reassurance of Lama Alasdair, Lama Klaus, and John Howard, and of Rinpoche’s White Sangha.
Crucially, we also have each other. Between us all, it is our inspiration, our love, our devotion and our continual efforts to practice and embody Rinpoche’s teachings in everyday life that will ensure Rinpoche’s enlightened efforts in bringing the authentic teachings of the Vajrayana here to the West flourish fully.
Marpa House will be open again for personal retreats and overnight guests from 21st May. Our programme here at the House until April 2027 continues to focus on retreats and contemplative practice, as is traditional following a great teacher’s Parinirvana. Next year, we will launch an ongoing programme of teachings and practice based on an outline Rinpoche gave us not long before his Parinirvana. We are also working hard to share the rich archive of teachings that Rinpoche gave us at Marpa House in an easily accessible format for you all.
We hope that this is reassuring. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any queries.
We very much look forward to seeing you all again soon, and to being together for Rinpoche’s memorial event in September, if not before.
With love,
The Trustees of The Dharma Trust, Marpa House.
About Rabjam Rinpoche
Kyabje Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche has a close and profound connection with Kyabje Chime Rinpoche and Marpa House. Rabjam Rinpoche is the combined emanation of the three main lamas from Shechen Monastery — the previous Shechen Rabjam, Shechen Kongtrul and Shechen Gyaltsap. As well as holding all of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche’s transmissions and more from the Kagyu and Nyingma lineages, he received all of Khenpo Gangshar’s transmissions from Chime Rinpoche.
Rabjam Rinpoche first came to Marpa House as an eight-year-old in 1976 with his grandfather, Khyentse Rinpoche, and has returned several times since to teach and give empowerments as well as supporting us with Rinpoche’s 50th anniversary of Vajrayana Buddhism in the West and more recently, Rinpoche’s Parinirvana. For nearly twenty years, Rabjam Rinpoche has also supported Rinpoche’s summerschool by sending his Khenpos to teach there every year.
Rabjam Rinpoche’s profound connection to HH 16th Karmapa, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and Khenpo Gangshar, his spiritual authority, and his deep and abiding love and respect for his uncle Chime Rinpoche all ensure that Chime Rinpoche’s legacy and vision will be nurtured, protected, and cared for. He also supports a large nunnery and has dedicated himself to promoting and supporting female Dharma practitioners, both laywomen and ordained women.
