Welcome to the August 2013 Marpa Monthly Update, letting you know about events and activities at Marpa House.

EVENTS IN AUGUST

Annual Marpa House Summer Tea Party Saturday 17 August, 2.30pm Come and join us for our annual gathering in the lovely gardens of Marpa House. This is a chance to catch up with old friends you may not have seen for a while, and is always a joyful occasion! Please bring some food to share.
Silent Retreat with Lama Klaus Monday 19 August – Sunday 25 August This retreat is now fully booked. Please be aware that the house will be in silence and that staff will be participating as much as possible in the retreat, so please contact the house only if necessary during this week.
An Introduction to Buddhism Saturday 31 August This day is for people who are just starting out or who are newish practitioners, and is led by David Crawford, who has been a student of Chime Rinpoche’s for many years. What is Buddhism really? David will describe Buddhism and emphasise an uncomplicated, everyday technique of Buddhist meditation. The day is free of charge but if you would like to stay for lunch the cost will be £5 for lunch. On the next day, Sunday 1 September, there will be a Meditation Practice Day and David will lead this day of meditation – an excellent follow-on from David’s introduction. If you are just starting out it will be better to come on Saturday, and then join in on Sunday if possible.
Meditation Practice Day Sunday 1 September A day of Calm Abiding meditation, led by David Crawford, and following on from the previous day’s Introduction to Buddhism.
A SUCCESSFUL SPONSORED WALK!

You sponsored us and we did it! Tansy, Barbara, Chris and Eva walked from Marpa House to Saffron Walden on Saturday 6 July and walked back to Marpa (except Eva who did some shopping and took the bus back). We had to change the route from the original plan to walk from Newport to Marpa House because Ben, our intrepid leader, was ill and none of us knew the route from Newport. But we did the required 10 miles and have achieved the goal for your sponsorship! It was a great day, the weather was perfect, and we think it was so much fun that we would like to do it again next year. Thank you so much for your support for this walk and for Marpa House, we could feel you all behind us as we walked that distance, and it was a great feeling to work together on behalf of this wonderful, special place. You can still make a donation to the Sponsored Walk by using this link to donate via PayPal. So far we have raised about £800! Thank you Ben for this brilliant idea to raise funds.

MEMBERS WEEKEND AT MARPA

A small group of members, young and old, gathered to share their stories, be creative, and practise together in a gentle and laid back way. The weekend was perfect, complete with sunshine and cupcakes!

YOUTUBE VIDEO TO CELEBRATE HH 17th KARMAPA

On the occasion of HH 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje’s birthday, Chime Rinpoche arranged to make a celebration video with the help of Young Sangha members and with scenes from Rinpoche’s teachings on the evening of HH Karmapa’s birthday. You can watch the video here.

Thank you for your support and ongoing interest in Marpa House! With best wishes, Marpa House Committee
